Cathedral of St John Berchmans - Music Ministry

Cathedral Music Ministry

The Cathedral of Saint John Berchmans seeks to celebrate the Catholic tradition of music in its fullness. The Cathedral embraces the strong tradition of Catholic music and liturgy that dates back to the very beginning of the Church. Saint John's continues to seek to preserve this tradition of music and offers it for all to participate who so desire. The role of music in the Catholic Church has historically been acknowledged as one of its greatest treasures, particularly in its Cathedrals. Aware of the current role of music, specifically choirs, the Cathedral music ministry seeks to make as its primary goal the fostering of the assembly's song; to lead the people in sung prayer. Additionally, the Cathedral music ministry embraces its identity as the model liturgical parish with the offerings of well-trained choirs that add great beauty and depth of solemnity to the celebration.

Cathedral Organ and Acoustical Project

Cathedral Choir

The Cathedral Choir is comprised of approximately 50 professional and volunteer singers from throughout the Shreveport-Bossier area. The Cathedral Choir provides music for the 11:00 a.m. Solemn Mass each Sunday from September through June, as well as maintains a rigorous schedule of pontifical celebrations, diocesan liturgies, and concerts. The choir sings the complete range of sacred liturgical music from Gregorian chant to composition of the modern day. In addition, the choir takes seriously its primary function responsibility of leading the singing of the hymns, the ordinary of the mass, responses, and the chanting the propers. On Feast Days and special occasions a choral mass is often offered. Rehearsals are in the Browning Choir Room on Wednesday evenings from 6:30pm to 8:00pm with a warm-up on Sunday mornings at 10:00am. For more information, please contact the Director of Liturgy and Music, Justin Ward in the Cathedral office.

Schola Cantorum

The Schola Cantorum is composed of members who explore the vast repertoire of Gregorian propers and the treasury of sacred music of the church, particularly polyphony. This ensemble has the primary responsibility of leading when the Cathedral offers the Mass in the Extraordinary Form.  For more information, please contact the Director of Liturgy and Music, Justin Ward in the Cathedral office.

Cathedral Boys' Choir and Cathedral Girls' Choirs

Both the Cathedral Boys' and Girls' Choirs combine excellent musical and liturgical training with an opportunity to serve the Church. The Cathedral Boys’ Choir provides an opportunity to boys in grades 3-8 with unchanged voices and the Cathedral Girls’ Choir is open to girls in grades 3-12.

Directed by Mr. Justin Ward, the Cathedral's Director of Music and Liturgy,  weekly rehearsals are held on Tuesdays from 3:30 until 5:00 for the Boys and Thursdays from 3:30-5:00 for the Girls.  The choirs sing alternately for 5:30 Sunday Masses and special Feast Days and  other events.  Members of the choirs expand their musical horizons in a Christ-centered environment, and learn techniques that develop vocal skills, leadership abilities, music reading proficiency, liturgical knowledge and more.

Both the Cathedral Boys' and Cathedral Girls' Choirs are affiliate members of the Royal School of Church Music in America, a standard liturgical music curriculum of youth choirs which brings together choirs throughout the United States to sing the joy and peace of God. Modest financial incentive is offered to choristers according to rank and accomplishment to foster a sense of pride and professionalism within the ensemble.

Though previous musical experience is not required, an informal audition will be necessary to join either of these choirs.  Please call the Cathedral Music Office to schedule this 15-minute informal session. Before auditioning, please be sure that a commitment to the rehearsal schedule can be a priority in the family schedule.

Cantors

The Cathedral is proud of the cantors who serve our parish.  Each cantor is trained by the Director of Liturgy and Music so that there is a consistency of service, which enables a prayerful liturgical style.  Cathedral cantors are expected to be a part of the Cathedral Choir and are scheduled by the Director of Liturgy and Music.  Cantors serve at the weekend masses as well as other Cathedral liturgies. The Cathedral Cantors are expected to have at solid knowledge of Roman Catholic liturgy, and to be able to read music so as to prepare new music on their own. These professional musicians are paid a stipend for each liturgy.  For more information, contact the Director of Liturgy and Music, Justin Ward in the Cathedral office.
